A Case of Acute Mastoiditis and a Perilymph Fistula with Fracture of the Stapes Following Blowing the Nose

چکیده
Stapes fractures are usually seen in association with tympanic membrane rupture as a result of direct injury or with major skull trauma. However, barotrauma such as blowing the nose is a rare cause of stapes fractures. Furthermore, fracture of the posterior crus is extremely rare. To our knowledge, the combination of a perilymph fistula and acute mastoiditis has not been previously reported.. We experienced a rare case in which blowing the nose led to otitis media, acute mastoiditis and a perilymph fistula, with fracture of the posterior crus of the stapes. The details of this case are presented together with the review of the literature and some discussion. Case Report

Traumatic fracture of the stapes and perilymph fistula: report of a case.
We herein report a case of traumatic fracture of the stapes accompanying vestibular window rupture with perilymph fistula, and its diagnosis and surgical procedure were discussed. In the present case, a direct force through the external auditory canal damaged not only the ossicular chain but also the vestibular window. On the exploratory tympanotomy, the complete dislocation and fracture of the...
متن کاملStapes Crural Fracture without Perilymph Fistula by Q-Tip Injury
We report a rare case where Q-tip induced mixed hearing loss without perilymph fistula and demonstrate the need for computed tomography imaging with three-dimensional reconstruction where fracture and dislocation of the stapes are suspected. A 28-year-old male experienced an accidental penetrating injury by a Q-tip in the right ear 6 years previously. Temporal bone computed tomography revealed ...
متن کاملTraumatic perilymph fistula in infants: a case report.
Traumatic perilymph fistula is reported to be rare in infants because of the small size of the infant external meatus. We treated an infant with a traumatic perilymph fistula in the right ear. A metallic wire had penetrated the tympanic membrane. Horizontal-rotatory nystagmus was also observed. Computed tomographic images revealed dislocation of the ossicles. The perilymph fistula was closed un...
متن کاملNoise-induced perilymph fistula.
Perilymph fistulae are difficult to diagnose because they present with a wide variety of signs and symptoms, they are associated with many etiologies, and they often mimic other conditions. In this article, we describe a case of perilymph fistula that featured one of its more rare causes: acoustic trauma--specifically, damage from a loud blast from the siren of a fire engine. We also review the...
